Our beaded bracelets, pendants, and lapel pins can be custom-made with your own horsehair, dog hair, or any other hair. Several models are also suitable for ashes, allowing you to always carry your beloved pet with you.
The amount of horsehair and the type of hair you should send for each type of jewelry is explained here.
For horsehair, it's recommended to send tail hair. This hair is thicker, longer, and stronger than mane hair. You can pluck small amounts of hair from the base of the tail, so you don't have to trim anything and the tail stays beautiful.
This could also be done with mane hair.
WASHING THE HAIR.
The hair should be washed or sent very clean. This prevents dirt and discoloration from showing on your precious jewelry.
Wash the hair with shampoo. Regular human shampoo is also acceptable.
Make sure there is no conditioner in the hair!
Let the hair dry thoroughly before sending it. Don't braid the hair.
Wrap it loosely around your hand and slide the hair into a sandwich bag.
This can be placed in an envelope. Just add your name and order number, and it's ready to go!
If you'd like to return any remaining hair, please indicate this when ordering.
HAIR QUANTITY
Pendants/bead bracelets: Our pendants and beads only use a limited amount of hair, making them suitable for mane hair. Please note (especially for white and light manes) that you send the thickest hair possible. I select the thickest and most suitable hair and cut it to the correct length. The hair should be at least 2 cm long and at least 10 pieces. These jewelry items are also suitable for dog or cat hair. More hair will be needed for a beautiful result.
Lapel pins: Four pieces of hair, each 3 cm long, are sufficient.
If you're unsure whether you have enough hair available, please contact me and we'll explore suitable options together.
If you have any special requests (for example, hair from multiple animals), please indicate this on the note with your name and order number in the envelope. We cannot make a piece of jewelry without your name and order number, so always include this with the hair you send!
You can also bring the hair to Wjuk 26 in Ternaard (near Dokkum). Please contact us at 06-13045085 (calls, texts, and WhatsApp are available) or by email at lindavanderkooi@outlook.com to schedule an appointment. Sample jewelry is also available in my studio, in case you're still unsure or want additional personalization.
What is a good bracelet length for a tight or loose bracelet?
Measuring the correct bracelet length is very simple. Simply measure the circumference of your wrist. It's best to do this just past the bump under your wrist. Depending on your comfort level, add a few centimeters. You'll find a table below with a brief overview.
Bracelet fit Bracelet size
Tight bracelet: Your wrist circumference + 1.5 cm
Regular bracelet: Your wrist circumference + 2 cm
Loose bracelet: Your wrist circumference + 3 cm
For example, if your wrist circumference is 16 centimeters and you like to wear your bracelets tight, the desired bracelet length is 16 + 1.5 = 17.5 cm.
How do you measure your ring size?
If you have a ring that already fits well, it's very easy. Use a ruler to measure the diameter of the inside of the ring (excluding the edge). The measured number of millimeters is your ring size.
Don't have a ring? Then you can easily measure the circumference of your finger with a piece of string. You can compare the measurements with the numbers in the size chart below to determine your ring size.

How to keep your jewelry beautiful!
When not wearing the jewelry, store it in the provided box or pouch.
Beaded bracelets stay beautiful when they are not, or not too often, exposed to water and excessive perspiration. Always remove bracelets, pendants, and rings when showering, and don't forget to remove your lapel pin from your garment before putting it in the washing machine.
Be careful with perfume and hairspray, as these can leave a dull finish on your jewelry.
Packing. If you want to surprise someone with a beautiful DIERbaar Jewel, you can choose to have it beautifully gift-wrapped. You can specify this in the selection.
